Punjab Emerges as National Leader in Anti-Drug Crackdown, Centre Tells Parliament

The Union government has told the Lok Sabha that Punjab leads the country in action against drugs, with an 84% rise in enforcement over three years. The disclosure endorses the Bhagwant Mann government’s anti-drug campaign and highlights intensified efforts to dismantle drug networks.

Punjab has recorded the most extensive action against drug-related crimes in the country, the Union government informed the Lok Sabha, marking a significant endorsement of the state’s ongoing campaign against narcotics. Responding to a question raised by Shiromani Akali Dal MP Harsimrat Kaur Badal, the Centre said Punjab’s enforcement agencies have intensified their operations at an unprecedented scale over the past three years.

According to the data placed before Parliament, action taken against drugs in Punjab has increased by 84 percent during this period, placing the state at the forefront of the national fight against narcotics. The disclosure highlights a sharp escalation in policing, surveillance, and enforcement measures aimed at dismantling drug networks operating within the state.

The Centre’s statement has been widely seen as a validation of the Punjab government’s “war against drugs” initiative under Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann. The campaign has focused on tightening law enforcement, increasing accountability, and pursuing traffickers across the supply chain, from street-level dealers to organised networks.

Reacting to the parliamentary disclosure, Punjab Cabinet Minister Kuldeep Singh Dhaliwal said the figures clearly demonstrate the state government’s zero-tolerance approach toward drugs. He stated that the data reflects tangible results on the ground and shows that the administration’s policies are not limited to announcements but are translating into sustained action.

Dhaliwal further said the Centre’s acknowledgement confirms that consistent and stringent steps are being taken to break the backbone of drug trafficking networks in Punjab. He added that the government remains committed to intensifying the campaign in the coming months, signalling continued pressure on narcotics-related crime.

The Centre’s confirmation in Parliament carries political and administrative weight, reinforcing Punjab’s position as a leading state in anti-drug enforcement. As drug abuse remains a critical social and public health challenge, the sharp rise in action underscores the scale of the crackdown and its potential impact on curbing the menace across the region.
